About Us

Maine Affordable Housing Coalition (MAHC) is a diverse coalition of developers, Community Action agencies, public housing authorities, investors, housing and service providers, advocates and others working to increase the supply of quality, affordable rental housing throughout Maine. The group was formed initially as the Southern Maine Affordable Housing Coalition in 2000, but since that time has extended its membership and activities to other areas of the state.

MAHC has commissioned numerous reports, including examinations of the economic impacts of developing affordable rental housing and the governance structure of Maine State Housing Authority, and has convened several public forums on the affordable housing crisis. We also serve as Maine's lead agency to the New England Housing Network, a coalition of housing and community development programs, and as the National Low-Income Housing Coalition's state coalition partner in Maine.

MAHC is a dues-paying membership organization that meets on the first Monday of each month in Portland, and is governed by a six member steering committee that meets regularly to set priorities and follow up on the coalition's activites. A list of current steering committee members and their contact information may be found on the Contact Us page of this website.

MAHC's activities are driven by the work of three committees, which generally meet once per month: (1) Public Policy, which focuses on legislative affairs and general advocacy on housing issues; (2) Membership, which is responsible for membership development and communication with members about MAHC priorities; and (3) Conference, which focuses on the planning and organization of MAHC conferences.
